Physical Therapists (PTs) are health care professionals who diagnose and treat indi- viduals from newborns to the very oldest, who have medical problems or other health conditions that limit their abilities to move and perform functional activities. Physical Therapists look to restore, maintain, and promote not only optimal physical function but optimal wellness, fitness and quality of life as it relates to movement and health. PTs also look at preventing the onset, symp- toms, and progression of impairments, func- tional limitations, and disabilities that may result from disease, disorders, conditions, or injuries. PTs examine each individual and develop a plan using treatment techniques to promote the ability to move, decrease pain, restore function, and prevent disability. These abilities to move are driven by four major systems in the body; musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiovascular/pulmonary, and integumentary. Practicing Physical Therapists perform examinations, evalua- tions, establish diagnosis, prognosis and intervention about a particular condition. Physical Therapy treatment may consist of therapeutic exercise, functional training, manual therapy (including mobilization/ manipulation), aquatic therapy, soft tissue mobilization, ultrasound, electrical stimula- tion, iontopheresis, hot packs, or cold packs depending on the patient's particular needs. Physical Therapists provide c'e for people in a variety of settings, including hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, home health agencies, schools, out-patient clinics, research, industrial, workplace or other occupational environments, college and professional sports environment. In an out-patient orthopedic setting patients come to physical therapy with a variety of different conditions including back and neck pain. They may be recovering from a rotator cuff, total hip, knee or shoulder surgeries. Patients may also be suffering from a sprain/strain injury. Health insurance covers most forms of physical therapy, but coverage does vary with each plan. Some people choose to pay for physical therapy directly, even if their policy does not cover their program or if their benefits have run out. In order for your insurance to cover physical therapy you must first be seen by your physician who will refer you to physical therapy. So, let us help you at Plumas Physical Therapy to allow you to go in life with less pain and increase in function. If you have any further questions give me a call, Kory Felker MPT or contact my office at 530-283-2202. "My right hand was almost useless due to a pinched nerve in my neck. After four visits to physical therapy, my neck is much more mobile, and I know the therapy is what has corrected the problem." Fred Thon "I'm now pain-free, and I am not going to need a hip joint replacement or back surgery." Stanley Diamond Michael W. Barton, D.D.S.
