Road crew earns saf(:lly award Debra Moore Staff Writer Plumas County road crews worked more than 87,000 hours without an injury, earning them the 2014 Golden Grader Award, which is now on display at the Public Works Department in East Quincy. Plumas is part of the 15-county Northern California County Engineers Association and each year the association acknowledges the county with the best safety record. Last year that honor went to neighboring Lassen County. This year Plumas received the award, with Humboldt, Shasta and Butte taking the next three places. Each of those organizations had at least two injuries in 2014, but Plumas did not have any. "When I joined the staff, I inherited a fairly decent safety program," Public Works Director Bob Perreault said, but it has improved. "This type of recognition and level of safety for the county is important," Perreault said. Joe Blackwell, who is the department's safety officer, said the county's road crews take safety very seriously. "Everyone looks out for each other," he said. Trindel Insurance Fund, the county's carrier, conducts safety training during an annual road commissioners' conference. "Joe's crews often serve as the role models," Perreault said. The trophy will reside atop a bookcase in Blackwell's office until the 2015 recipient is named. Perreault and BlackweU hope it will stay in Plumas. Powers leads rejuvenatq.00,d juvenile commission Debra Moore Staff Writer A host of private and governmental organizations provide services for Plumas County youths ranging from alcohol and drug prevention to college preparation. Bill Powers and Shelley Wilkerson presented a four-page list to the Board of Supervisors, which will be continually updated. "We are looking for areas where there are too many services or where there are services lacking," Wilkerson said. Both Powers and Wilkerson serve on the county's Juvenile Justice/Delinquency Prevention Commission, a group that has recently been rejuvenated. "Judge (Janet) Hilde asked Bill Powers to reorganize it and he's done a great job," Supervisor Lori Simpson said. "Our task is to look out for the welfare of wards of the court and foster children," Powers said. That means offering services within the county, but also placing kids out of the area when necessary. Powers said that the county places children at juvenile halls in Susanville and Nevada City. He dubbed the SusanviUe facility as "adequate" but called the latter "better in almost all ways." Wilkerson agreed. "The programming is extremely good; it's very clean and there is great interaction between staff and youth." County departments that provide services include Alcohol and Drug, Juvenile Probation, Mental Health and Social Services. Other organizations include Plumas Unified School District, First 5, Plumas Crisis Intervention and Resource Center, Plumas Rural Services and Feather River College.
