Bulletin, Progressive, Record, Reporter In the last 11 months, eight Plumas County residents have participated in competitive power lifting and won. It was only a matter of time before a sanc- tioned Power lifting competition or "meet" would happen somewhere in Plumas County. All that was needed was the drive to make happen. Last year Portola lost one of its favorite sons. Billy Funk was tragically killed in an automobile accident Oct. 31, two weeks be- fore Billy was to make his power lifting debut with the American Power Lifting Associa- tion. In honor of Billy and his dedication to weight lifting, the American Power Lifting Association, or APA, will sanction the Billy Funk Memorial "All Raw" Power Lifting Championships Oct, 9. The event will be held at Healthy Bodies Fitness in Portola, sponsored by AST Sports Science, J's Feather River Rental, Chris An- derson Chiropractic, Woods Fire and Emer- gency, Pizza Factory of Portola, High Sierra Kettlebell Club, Johna and Billy Berg at High Sierra Properties, Nancy Fong, Getting to the Heart of the Matter, Chalet View Lodge and Funk Automotive. Sponsorship packages are still available and those interested can contact promoters Brad and Jamie Loom/s, 513-3336. The Billy Funk Memorial is an "All Raw" competition which means that competitors • • • Jamie Loomis successfully squatted 160 pounds in Grass Valley last year, on her way to a first place in the sub-master division. "Competing in that event gave me an amount of self-confidence that I have never had," Jamie said after the event. "It was one of the most fun days of my life." Anyone can participate in the Billy Funk Memorial "All Raw" Power Lifting Champi- onships. Participants should get clearance from their physicians before starting any exercise program, and should prepare for the event with at least eight weeks of train- ing. Otherwise, all that is needed is the purchase of a $30 one-year membership with the American Power Lifting Associa- tion and the fees that go along with the chosen category. Those interested in competing in the event or attending classes to prepare for the event should contact promoters Brad and Jamie Loomis at 513-3336. Spectators are welcome to attend. Admis- sion will be $2 per person or $5 for a family of five. Opening ceremonies will be at 10:45 a.m. with the singing of the Star Spangled Ban- ner by local singer/songwriter K. Joanna Prichard. Lifting will start at 11 a.m. with the first event being the squat. For more information competitors and spectators can visit healthybodiesfitness.com or Healthy Bodies Fitness on Facebook. The Central Plumas Recre- ation and Park District's Adult Softball is down to just a couple of weeks left in the season. In the men's league, the Regulators have a comfort- able lead in first, with Stoney's, Busch Leaguers and Quincy Hot Spot in a tight race for second. In the women's league, Middle Age Mamas and Sweet Heat are looking like they will come down to the final game to decide the champion. In the Co-ed Lightning di- vision, Quincy Hot Spot and Deep Impact are neck and neck, and in the Co-ed Thun- der division, Indian Valley is holding on to a one-game lead over the Quincy Natur- al Foods Steamers. All the Adult Softball League games are played on weeknights at 6:30 p.m., and are played either at the fields at Feather River Col- lege, or at Gansner Park. Lightning division co-ed plays Mondays, men's divi- sion plays Tuesdays and Fri- days, Thunder division co-ed plays Wednesdays, and final- ly, women's division plays on Thursday evenings. For more information re- garding the Adult Softball League, contact the Recre- ation and Park District of- fice at 283-3278 or 34 Fair- ground Rd. in Quincy. Dan Pavlakis is one of many players who enjoy the adult soft- ball league sponsored by Central Plumas Recreation and Parks District.
