Month of August targets b stfeeding awareness Local breastfeeding rates and links to health benefits show that support for nursing mothers is a great investment now more than ever. During August, which is Breastfeeding Awareness Month, one local group is sharing its benefits for infants, which include reduced risk of severe lower respiratory tract infection, diarrhea, childhood obesity, type 2 diabetes and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The benefits for women include reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancers and possibly reduced risk of postpartum depression according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Mountain Interagency Lactation Coalition (MILC) is a group of certified lactation educators and others that meets quarterly. They discuss, promote and support education and environmental, policy and social improvements that make it easier for mothers to choose and~maintain breastfeeding. MILC members recognize the value of breastfeeding and its association with better health outcomes for both infants and mothers. With infants who were "ever" breastfed at 91.6 percent, California is second in the nation, according to the CDC's 2013 Breastfeeding Report Card. The state is also ranked second with 71.3 percent of"ever" breastfed infants at 6 months as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. According to data from the California Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health program, Plumas County had a 92 percent in-hospital "any" breastfeeding rate in 2012, bolstered by 100 percent amongst Hispanic women. The 86 percent rate for in-hospital "exclusive" breastfeeding was also lifted by 100 percent exclusive breastfeeding by Hispanic women in Plumas County. Starting at birth, breastfeeding is supported in most hospitals with rooming-in, which helps most mothers and babies get acquainted right away. Through close contact from the start mothers are learning feeding cues and establishing healthy breastfeeding patterns with their babies. Nurses are trained to assist new mothers to nurture breastfeeding, and attachment and bonding. Environmental and social supports are critical for breastfeeding mothers who are returning to work also. Acceptance, privacy and time to express and store milk are some of the unique needs of working mothers who wish to continue breastfeeding. "It's always challenging for mothers who are returning to school or work, but it is possible to continue exclusively breastfeeding," said registered dietician Katy Dyrr, who oversees the WIC Program and coordinates MILC: WIC has certified lactation educator staff that provides support over the phone or at their offices. WIC also provides nutrition support and education to eligible families with children zero - 5 and pregnant women. Professional breastfeeding support is provided by MILC members who are nurses, nutritionists, lactation consultants, doulas and other allied health professionals. Both during pregnancy and after returning home from a hospital stay, support can include counseling, encouragement, managing lactation concerns and education. "Education and guidance are given to new mothers in the convenience of their own home or over the phone," said public health nurse Liz Farrar, who coordinates the Public Health Agency's free Family First Home Visiting Program. ........... MILC members provide support in person, over the phone, in groups and individual settings, and in clinics or home settings. Plumas County mothers can start off with a strong support network through the Plumas Rural Services WIC program and the Public Health Agency programs that include home visits or in office consultations, and referrals. Additional supports can be found online including a free app called LactMed from the National Institutes of Health. It features information about drugs and supplements, and breastfeeding. LactMed includes information about maternal and infant drug levels, possible effects on lactation and on breastfed infants, and alternative drugs to consider. The LactMed app can be downloaded at http://1.usa.gov/iDuawj. For more information or an appointment contact Family First at Plumas County Public Health Agency at 283-6330 or the Plumas Rural Services WIC program at 283-4093.
