4C Wednesday, Aug. 21,2013 Bulletin, Record, Progressive, Reporter James Wilson Sports Editor sports@plumasnews.com Community MultiSport Events, the new racing events coordinating business out of Clio, has been hard at it this last month. In addition to holding open water swimming clinics in mid-July and early August, the business put on the inaugural Graeagle Century Ride. Now, Community MultiSport Events will hold its most ambitious event to date: a triathlon beginning and ending at the Millpond in Graeagle. The Tri-Graeagle Triathlon is set to take place Sunday, Sept. 1. "It takes a lot of planning and logistics to h01d a triathlon," said race director Alice Berg. "One of the most challenging parts of planning a triathlon is setting up the transitions properly, but I think we have it down." Triathletes of all ages and abilities are encouraged to sign up. Three races are available: the Olympic triathlon made for intermediate to expert triathletes; the sprint triathlon, which covers about half the distance as the Olympic; and the much shorter kids' "dip and dash" FICTITIOUS BUSINESS NAME STATEMENT NO. 2013-0000183 (Expires: 7/1/2018) The following person(s) is/are doing business as: Alpine Health Center. The rules set out cover various scenarios including crossing the centerline, bike positions' while passing and allowing unauthorized assistance. A complete set of rules can be found at usatriathlon.org. "Being sanctioned is a way for athletes to race and have a consistency to their races," said Berg. "It signifies that the race is safe and high quality." USA Triathlon required Community MultiSport Events to have a detailed event plan before being sanctioned. The specific set of rules that USA Triathlon sets out are for the safety of the triathletes. All participants are required to be a member of USA Triathlon before competing. Community MultiSport Events will seU one-day memberships for $12 the day of the triathlon. Full year memberships cost $39, or $15 for those under 18. Membership, even for one day, will insure the racers for any liabilities. Spectators are welcome to gather around the Millpond and watch the action. While the athletes are busy racing, others can meander through the different vending tents or listen to the live music provided. Once everyone is in, an awards ceremony will take place. Volunteers are still needed as course marshals to help guide the racers and keep track of who is coming through. Those interested in volu.nteering can contact Berg at 836-1201. Ramona Sanchez crosses the finish line to take the gold in the 1OK run. This was the second year in a row Sanchez finished first in the 1OK portion of the Willie Tate Memorial Run/Walk. Photo by James Wilson TATE RUN, from page 1C though, she couldn't stop. Sanchez placed first in the 10K last year as well, with a time two seconds faster than this year's. As with the 10K, women runners dominated the 5K as well. Heather Wick placed first in just 20:35. Wick's friend, Jen June, came in not too far behind her: with a total time of 23:35. June narrowly beat Martin Rizzo, who was the first man to make it, in just five seconds more. The oldest participant was Bill Sheahan, who was also the oldest runner last year. or REPAIRING: DOORS TRIM WINDOWS PLUMBING ROOFING ELECTRICAL We do insurance-related repairs If it's something we can't fix, we'll find somebody who can. Calif. Lic. #453927 (530) 283-2035 Sheahan, 88, received the Rusty Spike award. Sheahan also managed to shave a couple minutes off his time compared to last year's. Each participant received a runner's goody bag along with a shirt commemorating this year's event. The shirts were designed by one of Tate's former students, Kevin Segna, who is currently an animator for popular Fox shows such as "The Simpsons," "Family Guy" and "American Dad." Proceeds from the run went to benefit the Willie Tate Heart and Soul Award, a scholarship set up in Tate's name that is given to two students from Portola High School selected each year. In the past, the award was split between a senior boy and a senior girl from Portola. This year's recipients, however, are both boys. Mack Ammon and Klint Williams were selected for the award due to their high level of spirit and leadership abilities. More information on the Willie Tate Memorial Run/Walk can be found at portolarailroaddays.com. CLARIFICATION In last week's Sports and Recreation section, three photo captions mentioned Feather River College athletes at practice. The athletes were in fact at their respective sports camps. The camps are physical education classes and not practices. !
