10A Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2014 Portola Reporter Terminally ill woman makes her bucket list Debra Moore Staff Writer dmoore@plurnasnews.com Lorri Stephens has survived stage 4 throat cancer, a broken hip, shoulder and femur, and the death of her youngest son, but doctors say she won't survive the cancer that has now settled in her bones. With a prognosis of just six months left to live, time is running out for Lorri to fulfill her dreams. Her daughter, Amber Quirarte, set up Lorri's Bucket List on the website GoFundMe. There she outlines her mother's health issues, which have spanned the past six years, and lists three items on her mother's bucket list: swim with the dolphins, go camping in the redwoods and get a tattoo in honor of her son, Kevin, who was 24 when he died in an industrial accident at the Sierra Pacific Industries Quincy mill last October. "This woman has been dealt an unfair hand, to say the least," Amber writes on the website. "She deserves the time of her life." The family is trying to raise $3,500 to fulfill their mother's dreams, and to date has raised $1,710. During an interview last week, Amber said that the Lorri Stephens poses with some of her family during a visit in early September. From left: husband Larry, son Jerimy, Lorri and daughter-in-law Jenny, who is expecting Lorri's fourth grandchild. Photo submitted list might have to be altered. Her mother's health has been failing more rapidly than originally expected and her dream of swimming with the dolphins seems impossible at this point. "We've had to adjust our expectations," Amber said, and the family is now planning a ceremony for her parents, who have been married for 33 years, to renew their wedding vows. Amber, who is currently serving with the Air Force in Arkansas, has been granted a transfer to Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield so that she can be closer to her mother. She and her husband and two children hope to be relocated by the end of the month. Lorri's other surviving child, Jerimy, lives with his wife in southern California. The family came together during a reunion this past August. In addition to the vow renewal ceremony, Amber hopes that Lorri's grandson, Jaxson, 3, from son Kevin, will be able to fly with his mother to meet his grandmother before she dies. Before her healthfailed, Lorri worked for the school district in the Quincy High School cafeteria. After several years in that role, she worked for the county's senior nutrition program, cooking lunch for the area's seniors. But now as her mother grows frailer and continues to lose weight, Amber wants to grant her final wishes. In addition to visiting gofundme.com and entering "Lorri Stephens" to donate money, donors can also visit the Quincy branch of Bank of America, where a fund has been established. "It's been a really long year; we're just taking it one day at a time," Amber said. Check Out Our ,< ] PLUMASNEWS.COM PUBLIC NOTICE0000 Chilcoot property sale Frenchman Lake Road T.S.
