2C Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2014 Bulletin, Record, Progressive, Reporter FOOTBALL, from page 1C a little better." Penalties were a problem for both teams in the first half. The game was reminiscent of the Fourth of July with the number of flags thrown. Each time Quincy or Portola gained some traction the team was brought back for penalties. The second half continued to be ruled by the teams' defenses. The third quarter had more turnovers than a Swedish bakery, tallying five fumbles -- one right after the other. The final fumble of the quarter came when Quincy's Lane Lamar stripped the ball from Portola's Evan Leal and ran it back 51 yards for the first touchdown of the game, putting the Trojans up 12-0. The fourth quarte r was the biggest of the game points-wise. Quincy finished a drive it started in the third quarter when Craig Martynn made a short run for another Trojan touchdown. The Tigers finally struck back with about five minutes left in the game: Portola's Edgar Cuevas rushed in for a short-yardage touchdown to trail 18-7. Immediately afterward, the Tigers recovered an onside kick to regain possession. That didn't last long, however, as Portola fumbled again and Quincy got the ball once more. Martynn, for his second touchdown, slipped past Portola's defense into the end zone. Quincy intercepted the ball the first play after the kickoff, and sat on it to run the clock out and take the game. "We just didn't play well in many areas," commented Portola coach Steve Heskett. "Quincy outplayed us all night and they deserved to win." Martynn led the Trojans in rushing with 213 yards off 30 carries. Cody Morrison received two passes from Matt Beeson for 25 yards. Both Quincy and Portola will play away games this Friday. Quincy will travel to Los Molinos and Portola to Biggs. In other county football news, Chester traveled to Biggs to win its fourth game of the season, while the Greenville Indians made the long voyage to Herlong for a their second win of the season. Chester 35, Biggs 14 The Volcanoes' roster was seemingly made up of "comeback kids" last Friday night, as they steamed ahead in the second half after trailing 14-13 at halftime. Chester's defense stepped up in the second half, forcing two fumbles and catching one interception. The Volcanoes' offense really took advantage of the turnovers, utilizing their rushing game to move ahead. "It was a good game," said Chester coach Rich Dreith. "Jeremiah White was quite the workhorse." White led the team by far in rushing, plowing forward for 220 yards. Eddie Perez, the team's quarterback, rushed for 97 yards. As a team, the Volcanoes rushed for 375 yards. Chester will hit the road once again this Friday, taking on Maxwell at 7:30 p.m. Greenville 38, Herl0ng 8 The Indians were in full attack mode Oct. 4, as they took the field at Herlong and took the game. The win was much needed for Greenville, and elevated its record to 2-4. If the Indians can win the rest of their games this season, they can nab the third seed in playoffs. "As a team we played well," commented Greenville coach Justin Allan. "We looked like our old selves." Toward the beginning of the game, the teams looked evenly matched. Both scored a touchdown and made two point conversions in the first quarter. After that, Greenville blew its opponent out of the Water. The Indians forged ahead with two more touchdowns in the second quarter to lead 24-8 at halftime. One more touchdown per quarter in the second half, along with a defensively shutting Herlong out, led to Greenville's win. "Logan Carmichael, Darian Potts and Walker Meyers all had long touchdowns," said Allan. "Jonathan Clark had a nice interception and return on defense, and our defense tackled much better." Greenville will host Elk Creek this Friday at 7 p.m. for the Indians' homecoming game. Published FRB, IVR, PR, CP Oct. 8, 15, 20141 Former Quincy High School athletes and current Feather River College football players Keston Pilgrim, left, and Kyle Froggatt pose after a recent FRC game. Pilgrim and Froggatt are two of five locals playing for the Golden Eagles this season. Photo submitted Plumas high-school alumni play for Golden Eagles James Wilson Sports Editor sports@plumasnews.com With a roster 65 men deep, the Feather River College football team has five players that may look a bit familiar to Plumas spectators enjoying a game on any given Saturday. _ Recent Quincy High School graduates Keston Pilgrim and Kyle Froggatt recently made the switch from Trojans jersey to Golden Eagles jersey. From the Quincy High School graduating class of 2012, Mason Kennedy recently joined the Eagles' football squad as well. Portola's Juan "Lalo" Romero and Alberto Pena round out the locals on FRC's team. Froggatt and Pilgrim formed a friendship back in elementary school they . would eventually take into college. According to Froggatt, the two started playing football with each other at 9 years of age. The two dominated the field as Quincy Trojans and made the switch to green and g01d this season. Froggatt plays linebacker while Pilgrim plays defensive back. At the Eagles' first home game against College of the Sequoias, Pilgrim made an interception and ran it back 21 yards to the Sequoias' 2-yard line. Mason Kennedy played running back for the Trojans and currently plays defensive back for the Eagles. The two players from Port01aplayed in the 2009-10 seasons. Both players made it to division championshiPs the years they played. Romero graduated from Portola High School in 2009. His senior year, the Tigers went 10-2 after losing the championship title to Modoc. Due to moves during his senior year, Romero was ineligible to play for most of the season. As a defensive lineman for the Eagles, Romero is making up for lost time. In 2009, Pena was a crucial part of the Tigers' championship season. In his two years with the Tigei's, Pena scored 25 touchdowns and rushed for 1,741 yards, averaging 72.5 yards per game. Pena is a place-kicker for FRC and was responsible for multiple points-after this season. Feather River College has a bye this Saturday, but will host a tough game against Butte College on Oct. 18 at 3 p.m. FRC coaches and staff say they appreciate community support.
