2A Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2015 Portola Reporter Bosom Buddies From left, Charlotte Carmichael, Kandy Foard, and LeAnne Bergstrand show up to have their digital mammograms during Eastern Plumas Health Care's $80 October Special. "We use the buddy system," said Foard, the instigator, who has been bringing Bergstrand along for the past three or four years. Carmichael was a new addition this year, and definitely added to the party atmosphere. Bergstrand said her mother died in 2005 of breast cancer. "But, I didn't go until she (Foard) started the buddy system." When asked what motivated her to make sure her friends come along each year, Foard said, "We're at that age -- it needs to be done." The three women said they get together and make a day of it -- doing a bit of partying along with mammogramming. They all agreed it made the process a lot more fun to share it with friends. An added plus: "Our techs were fantastic, and their hands are warm!" said Carmichael. Changes to existing rules Medicare Annual Open Enrollment has started• However important changes may be on the horizon if congress decides to act soon to modify existing rules and fees such as co-payments and monthly premiums for seniors entering the system next year. Roarty added that the open enrollment period spans six months starting with the first month you are enrolled in Part B. What this means is that after your open enrollment period ends, you may not be able to buy Medi-gap. "It isn't entirely certain at this point in time, but people should be aware that congress may act to raise Medicare Part B monthly premiums," Roarty said. The increase would only affect new enrollees in 2016, she said, and not those on Medicare prior to 2016. Fraud alerts HICAP counselors can also help seniors prevent fraud, Roarty said. "We cover topics like fraud against the elderly, which is a horrible problem right now," she noted. Typical guidelines include never sharing your Medicare number or other personal information with anyone who contacts you by phone or email. Medicare never contacts enrollees for their Medicare information. Beware of sales people who knock on your door, warned Roarty, or call you uninvited and try to sell you a product or service. In its newsletter, Ronda Kramer, program manager for PASSAGES, cautioned against signing up with the wrong plan, or not doing anything that may cost new Medicare recipients thousands of dollars.
